As an Electric Nation trial volunteer, you are participating in a trial of Smart Charging with hundreds of other hybrid and pure electric vehicle drivers. This means that from time to time your charger may be remotely managed to reduce your vehicles charging rate or even pause charging for short periods of time – This is called Smart Charging.
You can find out more about Smart Charging here.
The new GreenFlux Smart Charging App has additional features that will enable you to make choices about the timing and cost of your charge (based on a simulated time of use electricity tariff (find out more about ToU tariffs in this guide Greenflux Smart Charging Tariff 181009).
The new app

But this only makes sense if you are set to Optimise Time and are charging during the peak electricity demand period. See “What does High Priority Charging Mean & When can I Request High Priority Charging?”
Yes and maybe or maybe not!
We’ll explain.
The one thing that remains the same is that all chargers within the trial will continue to be monitored during charging – if the total electricity demand of all active chargers at any time exceeds the capacity limit then smart charging management will occur to keep the charging demand within the limit.
Normally this happens on weekdays between 4:30 and 7:30pm.
By choosing Minimise Cost or Optimise Time & Cost on the app you will avoid charging at this time altogether, your charger will be managed to achieve this so long as plug in.
If you choose Optimise time and plug in before or during the peak period then your charge will start immediately, but it might be managed. This depends on how many other drivers choose Optimise Time and plug in before or during the peak period.
If enough people opt for Minimise Cost and Optimise Time & Cost then charging load is spread across the evening and charger management may be short, minimal or might not be needed at all.
So, yes, your charge will be managed, but in a good way if your chose Minimise Cost or Optimise Time & Cost – remember this will add value to your Reward
And maybe or maybe not if you choose Optimise Time, depends on how many others make this choice too and when they plug in.
Requesting High Priority Charging puts your current charge session at a higher priority level than all other charging sessions during the time your EV is charging.
All High Priority requests have the same high priority level.
Normally, chargers can be on Medium or Low priority:
– Medium priority – EVs which are in the main part of their charging cycle
– Low priority – EVs that are on a timer and have not yet started charging, have completed their charge, or are slowing down charging to completion.
The available power for EV charging is given to High priority chargers first, then any remainder to the Medium and Low priority groups in turn.
If the Smart Charging power limit is reached (i.e. more power would be drawn by charging EVs than is available), then High Priority smart chargers will continue to charge at full rate until their battery is full. All other EVs will get a share of the remaining power (cyclic reduced power, pause and full-power charging, cycling every 15 minutes) until the available power rises to allow all EVs to charge at full rate or until EVs complete charging, releasing power to other EVs on charge.
But, if the power available to charge EVs is more than the total power being drawn by all EVs plugged in (which is true for almost all of the day and night) then requesting High Priority makes no difference to the time it takes to charge an EV.
The time when requesting High Priority can make a difference is the late afternoon to early evening peak demand period, when smart charging is active most often in the Electric Nation trial.
But, requesting High Priority only really makes a difference if you have a short-term need for charge, to make a journey later in the evening and not having enough charge in the EV for that journey.
This is, obviously, a decision only you can make, our advice is to only use High Priority requests when you need charge for an immediate journey when you plug in during the late afternoon or early evening.
If too many drivers chose to request High Priority charging before or during a Smart Charging event, it may be that the system must curtail even High Priority chargers to meet the network capacity limit.
Only request High Priority when you really need it!
There are some limitations to the GreenFlux App approach:
If everyone choses Optimise Time and requests High Priority at around the same time on the same day, then everyone charging on that day and at that time will be given the same priority and will be treated in the same way – effectively everyone gets the same priority.
So, everyone then involved in a managed charging event will be treated in exactly the same way, which may mean reduced charging and even charging pauses for a period of time. No-one will get higher priority than anyone else charging at that time.
Hint: Only request High Priority when you really need priority charging!
A request for High Priority only lasts for the active charging session; if your EV is unplugged then the High Priority request is lost.
You can request High Priority once your EV is plugged into your Electric Nation smart charger and your EV is charging by clicking “View” (when it is blue).
A request for High Priority does not work if you set a timer in the car to charge later (on the basis that if you’re using a timer you can’t be in a rush to get a charge).
The charger communications must be working for the App to work. If charger communications are not working then the charger will enter safe charging mode and charge at 13A until communications are restored. If you think your charger is offline (i.e. it’s charging at 13A) then there are some troubleshooting instructions available here.
The App only works with your Electric Nation Smart Charger.
No, the GreenFlux Electric Nation App only interacts with the GreenFlux system and, via that, your Electric Nation smart charger.
The App does not replace or interfere with EV control functions you may have through an EV app you may have, such as switching pre-heat on or timed charging.
The GreenFlux app will not over-ride any charging rate restrictions you may set on your EV Settings (dashboard settings or via your EV app), such as reduced charging rate or timed charging.
If you have already installed the GreenFlux app, it will automatically update over the next week or so (please be patient we’re releasing it in batches). The update should remember your Charge Card Identifier and log you in immediately when you open the app.
If you have auto update switched off, you may need to authorise the update on your phone.
When you were invited to use the App you will have been sent a password (Charge Card Identifier) – the App will not work without this Charger Card Identifier that links your copy of the App to your Electric Nation charger.
The App is called “Greenflux Electric Nation”
Then for Android phones, go to Play Store, search for “Greenflux” or ” Greenflux Electric Nation” and install the App (you may need your google account username and password to install the App)
Or for iPhones, go to the Apple store, search for “Greenflux” or “Greenflux Electric Nation” and install the App (you may need your AppleID and password to install the App)
When you have installed the App go to the next FAQ “How do I get started with the GreenFlux App” for instructions to login for the first time.
If you experience any difficulties with finding the app then please contact the support line phone number or email address.
FOR FIRST TIME USERS ONLY – does not apply to updates.
Once you’ve installed the GreenFlux Electric Nation App (on either iPhone or Android phone) click to open it.
The first time you open the App you will see some welcome screens, please take time to read through them, they are repeated below for reference.
Once you’ve been through the welcome screens, you will be asked to enter your “Charge Card Identifier”, this will be emailed to you separately.
If you update the original app the Charge Card Identifier will be remembered by the app and will automatically log you in when you open the app.
If you’re new to the app, you will have been sent a unique password (your Charge Card Identifier) that links your copy of the App to your charger when you were invited to use the original app.
If you haven’t received your Charge Card Identifier or need a reminder contact support@drive-electric.co.uk
FOR FIRST TIME USERS ONLY – does not apply to updates.
When you have been through the welcome screen on the app you will be asked to input your Charge Card Identifier, this will have been sent to you already by support@drive-electric.co.uk
When you see this screen enter the code, click “remember me” and then “Login”
That’s it you’re good to go!
When you login to the App you will see the app home screen:
Information to note (from the top of the screen)
The number shown in the image (in this case ELMGFX_0006, one of Electric Nation’s test system chargers) is your Charger Identification number and will be something like UK-GFX-ENA0234 (the four numbers are your unique number)
Reward Balance is the value of your smart charging reward at that time – see “What does Reward Balance on the app mean?”
Charge Schedule (Minimise Costs in this case) is your current choice. You can change this by clicking the settings icon (cog) – see “What Does Charge Schedule on the App mean?”
Charge Session tells you whether your EV is plugged in or not (in this case not) – If you plug in your EV it will say “Charging” – see “My EV is charging and I’ve clicked “View” – what am I seeing?”
And you will see “View” appears – this allows you to see information about your charging session and access the High Priority Request function – see “My EV is charging and I’ve clicked “View” – what am I seeing?”
By sweeping up on the home page of the GreenFlux app you can view details of your recent charging transactions – see “I’m looking at the Recent Transactions page – what am I seeing?”
The My Charging Session page of the GreenFlux app has two sections
The top section tells you:
These can differ for many reasons – see below and other Q& A below
A toggle indicator – indicates whether you have already requested High Priority)
And a push button to request High Priority during the current charging transaction
These buttons are linked, you can use either.
The lower section of the page shows you a graph of the past two hours of the current charging transaction
This is particularly useful to work out whether your EV is nearing full charge or is fully charged and whether your charger is being managed
The graph has two lines
Here are some examples of the sort of things the graphs might show
Start Charging transaction and full rate charging:
7 kW (32A) charging EV
3.5 kW (16A) charging EV/PHEV
The short pause after start charge is normal
Note: Many PHEVs/EVs do not draw the maximum allowed current, as shown here by the gap between the green and blue lines.
Paused waiting for a Charge to Start:
This depends on your charging schedule choice and when you plug in (“Minimise cost” and “optimise time and cost” only – otherwise Fully Charged)
Smart Charging Event:
7 kW (32A) charging EV
3.5 kW (16A) charging EV/PHEV
One or more dip and rise in current limit and current drawn like above indicate active charge management has occurred and maybe is still occurring.
End of Charge:
7 kW (32A) charging EV
3.5 kW (16A) charging EV/PHEV
PHEVs/EVs show two basic patterns when charging is finished
The first show sudden stop to charging
The second show gradual reduction in charging rate to finish
Fully Charged:
Current limit may be 0A or 13A Current drawn will always be 0A
OR, depending on your charging schedule choice and when you plug in (“Minimise cost” and “optimise time and cost” only – otherwise Fully Charged
If your EV is preheating when you view transaction, it might look something like
By sweeping up on the home page of the GreenFlux app you can view details of your recent charging transactions (times when you’ve plugged in your EV).
Each transaction record tells you
If you never use the GreenFlux App or can’t use it because you don’t have a smartphone – don’t worry, your charger will work as normal.
Your charger will be set to Optimise Time, so your EV will always start charging when you plug in (unless you use a timer). You can still earn a reward if most of your charging takes place during the ‘cheaper’ periods (outside 16:30 – 20:00).
You can always ask a member of your family or a friend to download the App and get them to change your charging schedule if you want to take advantage of the Reward Scheme – see “What does Reward Balance on the app mean?”
Yes.
But this depends on when you choose to charge your EV.
If you often start charging at the peak price time, then your Reward may go down.
On the other hand, if you often charge during the day, late evening or overnight your Reward will go up.
We will keep all trial participants who don’t use the app informed of their reward balance as this part of the trial progresses (about once a fortnight).
Remember, you can always ask a member of your family or a friend to download the App and get them to change your charging schedule if you want to take advantage of the Reward Scheme.

The Reward balance is a way of showing you how much money you could save by charging at off-peak electricity price times (or how much extra you would pay if you chose to charge at peak price time) – if you were on a time of use tariff like the one we are simulating for this part of the Electric Nation Smart Charging Trial.
To start with we are giving you a reward of £10.
The reward is increased or decreased depending on when you charge your EV – the amount added or taken away is based on the difference between the simulated tariff and an assumed basic fixed rate tariff rate of 15p per unit (kWh).
If you chose to set the GreenFlux App to “minimise cost” then charging during the day would save you 3p per kWh (unit of electricity) (15p minus 12p) and at night 5p (15p minus10p). For every kWh of charge you will have 3p or 5p added to your Reward Balance.
If you chose to set the GreenFlux App to “optimise time”, then for every kWh consumed at peak price time your balance will be reduced by 15p (30p minus 15p). So, charging for 2 hours at peak rate at 7 kW would incur a reduction in your Reward of 7 kW x 2 hours x 15p = £2.10. But if your charge then continues into the late evening/overnight you would make up some of this loss in cheap rate charging.
If you chose to set the GreenFlux App to “optimise time & cost”, then you will never be charged at peak cost time, but you will get charge starting in the “taper tariff” period. This starts expensive (22p per kWh, so would incur a debit to your Reward), but after an hour and a half then becomes cheaper than the reference rate, so you start making a saving – charging for the whole taper tariff period ends up cost neutral to your Reward (nothing is added or taken away from your Reward balance).
The overall loss/gain to your Reward, on any charge you make, will depend on your app setting choice, when you plug your EV in to charge and how much charge your EV takes.
This is a new feature of the GreenFlux App that allows you to choose whether to reduce your EV charging costs – see “What does Reward Balance on the app mean?”
If you chose to use the new GreenFlux Smart Charging App you have three profiles to choose from
Minimise Cost – The GreenFlux App will charge your EV when electricity prices are low, i.e. Night and Day periods only
Optimise Time – The GreenFlux App will charge your EV from the moment you plug it in, whatever the cost i.e. at all periods. You will still experience a short pause just after you plug-in.
Optimise Time& Cost – a compromise, the GreenFlux App will not charge your EV when the cost is highest, but will charge during the “Taper Tariff” period from 7pm to 10pm as well as Night and Day periods
Find out more about the Time of Use Tariff in this document: Greenflux Smart Charging Tariff 181009
If you open the app when your EV is not plugged in, the text under Charge Session will say “Not Charging”. If you’re charging your EV and the text still says “Not Charging” then it is likely that your charger is not communicating – refer to the troubleshooting instructions here
If you plug your EV in, the display will change (you may need to swipe down to refresh display) and the text will change to “Charging” and will also display VIEW
Clicking on “VIEW” Takes you to information about your charging session:
see “My EV is charging and I’ve clicked “View” – what am I seeing?” to find out about this display
When you have requested High Priority the toggle button at the top of the My Charge Session page will be ON
Sometimes the request for High Priority doesn’t get through (usually because of poor mobile or wifi signal), if you don’t see the toggle button go on (Blue to the right)
Your request for High Priority is acknowledged by a pop-up message at the bottom of the screen, saying “High Priority will be enacted within 15 minutes”
Sometimes the App doesn’t refresh the display.
Swipe down on your phone screen to refresh the display.
You can always request High Priority again if you are not sure if it worked.
This is quite normal for EV charging: Some EVs (especially plug-in hybrids) nominally charge at 16A (3.5 kW), whilst others are 32A (7 kW). The GreenFlux system normally uses these as charge rate limits, so a 16A EV will not be allocated 32A.
However, many EVs actually draw slightly less than this nominal charger rate (for example a nominal 32A Nissan Leaf typically draws 28A-29A and a nominal 16A Leaf typically draws 15A)
Also, many EVs slow down their charge rate when the battery is nearly full, slowly reducing the current they draw over about an hour.
And, in some cases, EVs can draw reduced current in the middle of a charge cycle – to condition the battery cells.
If you see that your EV is drawing significantly less than your charger is allowing it to – don’t panic, your EV is either nearly charged or just carrying out cell conditioning. Wait a while to see what happens.
Your EV is either
There are four possibilities here:
If you’ve just plugged your EV in, this is normal – the GreenFlux Smart Charging system always measures the charge rate your EV takes for one minute and then puts your EV on 0A limit until the next quarter hour starts (o’clock, quarter past, half past and quarter to the hour), when it will be allocated a charge limit.
Or
Your charge session is paused because you have chosen “Minimise cost” or “optimise time and cost” as your Charge Schedule – charging will resume later
Or
Your EV is fully charged and your charger has been set to Low priority (especially during a Smart Charging event): check you EV (or EV App) to see whether your EV is fully charged
Or
A Smart Charging event is occurring: your charger is in a 15 minute period where charging your EV has been paused – if you wait a while (maximum 15 minutes) you will see that your charger limit changes (usually to 32A or 16A). If you need your EV charged sooner rather than later, then you could choose to request High priority charging.
The GreenFlux Smart Charging system measures your EV’s charge rate when you first plug in – if your EV has a nominal maximum charge rate of 16A (all plug in hybrids and some EVs) it will only ever be allocated 16A.
If your EV has a nominal charge rate of 32A your charger will be given a maximum limit of 32A.
If your EV has a nominal 32A charge rate (7kW) and only ever gets allocated 16A there may be a problem with your charger, charging cable or EV – contact support@drive-electric.co.uk and let us know
If your EV has a nominal 32A charge rate (7kW), then in rare cases it may be curtailed to 16A due to smart charging. This curtailment will only last 15 minutes.
Sometimes the GreenFlux Smart Charging systems limits charging to 13A, this is normal and indicates that your EV is set as Low priority – usually because its battery is nearly full.
Occasionally, if there are a lot of other EVs charging during a demand management event some EVs are limited to 13A charging to use available electricity network capacity to its fullest extent, keeping as many EVs charging as possible.
This is normal for a Smart Charging event – the current available is being shared with all EVs charging at this time.
The GreenFlux Smart Charging system reallocates the available current to all EVs plugged in every 15 minutes, if there isn’t enough current available to charge all EVs at their nominal charging rate then some EVs are allocated a reduced rate.
Every 15 minutes the GreenFlux Smart Charging system reviews the situation and reallocates the available current.
When the available current is more than the nominal charge rate for all EVs on charge, then all are allocated their nominal charge rate (32A or 16A).
Smart charging could happen at any time of day, but normally only on weekday late afternoon/early evening, so you’re most likely to encounter charge management if you chose “Optimise Time” as your Charge Schedule.
This is normal.
If you set your EV to charge at a particular time using your EV’s onboard timer (or your EV’s app), your EV won’t draw any current until that time is reached.
The GreenFlux system detects this and puts your charger on Low priority. This enables other EVs to charge at full rate while your EV is waiting to start charging.
As soon as your timer expires and the EV wakes up and starts charging, the GreenFlux Smart Charging system allocates your charger its nominal charge rate.
Unless your timer is set to before the allocated start time according to your Charge Schedule choice (“Minimise cost” or “Optimise time and cost” only) – in which case the GreenFlux system take priority and your charge will be delayed beyond your timer setting
In the unlikely event that a Smart Charging event is happening as your EV wakes up and starts charging, your charger will be allocated a charge rate alongside all the other active chargers at that time.
Note: Requesting High priority charging through the App when you set a timer does not work – it is assumed that you do not have a need for High priority charging if you set a timer.
You only need to press the button once in a charging session to request High priority – pressing the button more than once has no affect.
Pressing the button again does not cancel the request for High Priority.
Not through the app.
The only way to cancel a High priority request is to unplug your EV and plug it in again.
The High priority request is only enacted at the end of each quarter hour – you have to wait to see the effect of your request for High priority charging.
However, if this continues the explanation may be that there are a high number of EVs charging at the same time as you are and a lot of EV owners have requested High priority charging. If more EVs are set to High priority than the available current can supply all at their nominal charging rate then restrictions will still apply and all High priority EVs will be treated in exactly the same way.
Only request High priority when you really need it – if this system is abused it will not work!
Yes!
You can install the App on as many phones as you like, use the same password each time you login to a new device.
The request for High priority only works once, whatever device you use.
The request for High priority charging only lasts for the duration of your current charging session – when you unplug your EV the request is cancelled.
If you need High Priority charging you need to request it for the current charging session.
No.
The Request High Priority function is for occasional use, for example when you need an immediate charge for a journey you want to make sooner rather than later.
Requesting High Priority only makes a difference to your charge:

This is a simulated Tariff for the Electric Nation project only
It does not have anything to do with your contractual relationship with your Energy supplier (e.g. British Gas, nPower etc.)– the cost of charging your EV will continue to be charged on your electricity bill as usual.
The Electric Nation trial is simulating what might happen to your electricity costs for charging your EV if you were on a Time of Use Tariff. The cost savings and additional costs that you might see on such a tariff are reflected in your Smart Charging Reward provided by Electric Nation and shown in your copy of the GreenFlux Smart Charging App.

There are existing time of use tariffs available that could save you money by charging at particular times of day, from simple Economy 7 tariffs, that need a special dual rate meter installed, to some newer and more sophisticated tariffs that require a smart meter to be installed.
If you are interested in changing to a time of use tariff we suggest you look at Ofgem’s accredited energy price comparison sites list https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/consumers/household-gas-and-electricity-guide/how-switch-energy-supplier-and-shop-better-deal/compare-gas-and-electricity-tariffs-ofgem-accredited-price-comparison-sites

The Electric Nation Smart Charging Reward will operate from the date you start using the new GreenFlux App to the end of this phase of the trial (to end before 31st December 2018).
All your EV charging on your Electric Nation supplied Smart Charger will be included in the Reward calculation (which can go up or down, depending on when you charge)
Yes it will.
If your visitors charge on your smart charger you will receive reward (or loose reward if they charge at peak time) for their charge.
We would prefer you didn’t encourage this to try to maximise your reward as it would spoil our project findings.
We already have a good picture of charging patterns for all the chargers in the trial (and we know what EVs are associated with each charger) – we will notice abnormally high energy consumption on the charger. In extreme cases we reserve the right to withdraw a participant from the trial and reward system if we discover abuse of the reward system.
But don’t forget, you’ll still be paying your energy supplier for the energy you use to charge EVs and this will be more than your Reward!.
No
The Electric Nation Smart Charging Reward is only available for participants in the Electric Nation Smart Charging Trial for a limited period and will definitely not be available beyond 31st December 2018.

The GreenFlux app and Electric Nation Smart Charging Reward only works with your Electric Nation smart charger.
The default charging profile for the App is “Optimise Time”, your EV will always start charging when you plug in.
If you currently use a timer on your EV to schedule charging this will work as before. If you’d like to earn a reward balance without using the app then you could start using a timer so your car begins charging after the most expensive period (20:00 onwards).
Depending on when you chose to charge your EV, your Reward balance will go up if you charge during cheaper times and will go down if you charge at more expensive times according to the Electric Nation Smart Charging Tariff schedule.
At the end of this part of the trial we will tell you what your reward balance is and will send you an Amazon voucher to that value.
We will email you an Amazon Voucher at the end of the trial.
If you have an Amazon account you will be able to redeem this voucher for any goods Amazon offer (including Kindle books).
If you don’t have an Amazon account you could open one and use the voucher.
Or you can pass the voucher on to family or friends as a gift or they can use it to buy something for you.
You don’t have to use the GreenFlux app, but it might help to set it to Minimise Costs to make sure you only charge at night.
You can carry on using you EV’s timer to take advantage of your Economy 7 or solar generation.
If you do, your Reward will go up! And we will pay you the Reward you earn.
Yes, your energy supplier will still charge you for the energy you use to charge your EV during this part of the trial, but at your contracted rate.
The Electric Nation simulated tariff does not affect your electricity supply contract or price.
